BWG Foods is proud to announce that we have become a verified member of the world’s first national sustainability programme, Origin Green. The announcement comes following recognition of BWG Foods’ commitment to pursuing sustainable business practices.
The business has worked very closely with Bord Bia’s Origin Green team to develop a sophisticated and comprehensive sustainability strategy that includes measurable targets around initiatives that will contribute positively to the environment, and also to the local communities in which BWG and its retailers operate.
BWG Foods has focused its efforts on a range of initiatives to reduce their environmental impact including transitioning to renewable energy sources, lowering carbon emissions, reducing waste output and adopting more sustainable sourcing methods within its supply chain.
Commenting on the announcement, Simon Marriott, Chief Operating Officer, BWG Foods said; “Our commitment to sustainability is borne out of the desire to always do the right thing by our customers and our communities, by reducing our environmental footprint, contributing to healthier diets, and supporting local communities. Becoming a member of the Origin Green community signifies our achievements to date and our strong focus on sustainability into the future.”
BWG Foods recently became the first FMCG company in Ireland to launch a fleet of new CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and biogas vehicles, in place of traditional diesel fuel. These vehicles significantly reduce the carbon intensity of BWG’s expansive distribution operation, generating C02 savings of up to 22 percent per CNG truck, and 90 percent per biogas truck. Cleverly, BWG Foods contributes food waste from its distribution operations to produce biogas fuel for its new biogas vehicles, making this a circular solution.
